Local Issues, Not Global Headlines

I believe that effective local governance should be relatively uneventful and, perhaps, even a little dull. Town council meetings should focus on the practical, everyday matters that directly affect residents: approving zoning permits, discussing the aquatic centre, and ensuring garbage collection runs smoothly. These may not be the most exciting topics, but they are the backbone of a well-functioning municipality.

In my social studies classes, I teach the Principal of Subsidiarity. This means problems should be solved by the level of government closest to the people affected by those decisions. In other words, municipal governments should handle local matters, provincial governments should oversee regional concerns, and federal should address national issues. When each level of government sticks to its appropriate responsibilities, governance becomes more efficient, effective, and responsive to the needs of citizens.

As your councillor, I will practice this principle. I will focus my time and energy on the issues that truly fall within Strathmore's scope. Our administration should not be diverting their limited time toward tackling national or global challenges. While those matters are important, I know they are best addressed by the appropriate levels of government.

Instead, I will work to ensure that our town's administration is dedicated to the meticulous, day-to-day work of sound fiscal management. My goal is to ensure that Strathmore thrives, not through grand gestures or lofty political statements, but through responsible, diligent stewardship of our community's resources.

Town council meetings should rather dull; but that is precisely the sign of a community being well-managed.
